Activities and Attractions in the Silver City Area…
The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, located 44 miles north of Silver City at the end of US Route 15, offers a glimpse of the homes and lives of the people of the Mogollon culture who lived there from the 1280s through the early 1300s. The Monument was established on November 16, 1907, and contains 533 acres. Seven natural caves occur high in the southeast-facing cliff on a side canyon, ad 5 of the caves contain the ruins of cliff dwellings, about 42 rooms. The Dwellings can be walked through, and there is a museum and a visitor center nearby. New Mexico True Television has produced a three-minute video tour of the Gila Cliff Dwellings, which can be viewed on YouTube.com. The Gila Wilderness and Gila National Forest 3.3 million acres of publicly owned forest, range land and wilderness and some 1,500 miles of foot and horse trails. These areas offer unlimited opportunities for nature study, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and archaeology. We're located on the western side of the Gila Forest and Gila Wilderness, where some of the Silver City area's best hiking is found. Within a half-hour's drive of Casitas de Gila Guesthouses are hiking trails for every skill level, all uncrowded and offering spectacular vistas and scenery. Horseback riding for all ages and experience levels is available in the Arenas Valley area east of Silver City. Spend from 2 hours to all day experiencing and exploring the beautiful vistas of the Mogollon Mountains, canyon riding, river crossings, and wildlife. Advance reservations are required; please contact the outfitters directly. Gila River Riparian Preserve A short 15-minute drive from Casitas de Gila Guesthouses is the Gila Riparian Preserve, a 7,900 acre preserve established under the Natural Lands Protection Act and owned by the Nature Conservancy in conjunction with the State of New Mexico. The Preserve offers exceptional opportunities for observing diverse bird, animal and plant life while hiking along the free-flowing Gila River. Over one-third of all the bird species in North America have been sighted within the area of the Preserve. Easily accessed by automobile, this area highlights Southwest New Mexico landscape at its finest with magnificent groves of centuries-old cottonwoods and sycamores lining the cool, clear waters of the Gila River, flowing beneath towering cliffs of volcanic rock.
